Pest Control in Tawa Reserves -update 2025

In 2023 the following trap lines were added to our network,

  • Duncan Park
  • Grasslees Reserve
  • Tawa Junction
  • Porirua stream .

This has resulted in a four-fold increase to our catches in 2024

For comparison in 2022, prior to these trap lines being installed we caught a total of 273 pest animals (rats, mice and hedgehogs), this more than doubled in 2023 to 626, while our total catches in 2024 were an impressive 819!

These trap lines complemented our existing baiting network in our forested reserves. After a period of recruitment, we now have a full
complement of dedicated volunteers. Their efforts can be seen with all accessible bait stations being regularly monitored and maintained. In the 2020/21 the usage was static and around 73kg. This increased to 83kg, 2022, and again to 97kg, in 2023. In 2024, the bait usage returned to 2020/21 levels at 75kg.

In 2025, the Friends are looking to enhance the baiting network, with an additional trap line in Redwood bush and upper sections in Forest of Tawa.
